Association between Sleep Duration and Dental Caries in Korean Adults
Oh Jung-Hyeon

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to confirm the relationship between sleep duration and dental caries in Korean adults and provide basic data regarding the future maintenance and improvement of the oral health of adults.

Methods: This study was conducted using raw data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2015). The study included 5,931 adults aged 19 years or older who answered a health questionnaire and underwent oral examinations. Statistical analyses were performed using the chi-squared test and multiple logistic regression analysis using SPSS 21.0.

Results: The risk of dental caries in relation to sleep duration was assessed. The group with a sleep time of less than 5 hours had a significantly higher risk of dental caries than that with a sleep time of only 6-8 hours (odds ratio=1.32, 95% confidence interval: 1.09-1.60).

Conclusions: Sleep duration and dental caries are significantly related. Further research is needed to prove the temporal relationship between future sleeping duration and dental caries.
